Planning for the Year Ahead
In early January, ZRCLC staff was kept busy at our teachers' retreat in Melaka. We focused on best practices and strategies to continually improve our daily work-flow and ideas to enhance our curriculum. As our teachers develop deeper skills, complemented by our pool of virtual and in-person volunteers, the goal continues to implement ways to improve our children's learning experience.
During the retreat, our teachers also had the opportunity to visit the Montfort Youth Centre, which Zotung had dedicated proceeds from our 2025 Christmas Caroling fundraiser towards a two-year full scholarship.
And retreats cannot do without such much deserved R&R! Our staff had a well-deserved enjoyable time visiting key sights in Melaka after our discussions and planning work.
BEGINNING THE TERM IN PRAYER - 28 JAN 2026
Term 1 Mass with A Special Celebrant
As a Catholic school, Zotung begins each Term with the celebration of Mass, offering our children, teachers, families, and all our work to the Lord. Starting the Term in prayer reminds us that education is not only about academics, but also forming hearts, nurturing values, and cultivating a sense of purpose grounded in faith. Through this, we ask God to guide our community and bless the journey ahead.
On 28 January 2026, we were privileged to celebrate Mass Fr Sixtus Thawng Uk, who has been sent by his bishop in Myanmar to pastor and care for the Myanmar refugee community in Kuala Lumpur.
The readings were proclaimed by Timothy (Myanmar) and Mella (Syria), beautifully reflecting the rich diversity of our school community. The theme of the Mass, “Being a light to the world,” was joyfully echoed in our opening hymn, “This Little Light of Mine.”
Providentially, the Mass was celebrated on the feast day of St Thomas Aquinas. In his homily, Fr Sixtus shared how St Thomas Aquinas is a powerful example of what it means to be a light to the world. St Thomas devoted his life to the pursuit of truth, wisdom, and understanding, believing that learning and questioning were ways of honouring God. Despite his great intellect, he was known for his humility, using his gifts not for personal glory, but in service to others and to help them grow closer to God.
Fr Sixtus reminded the children that being a light does not always mean doing something grand or being widely known. Often, it means using the gifts God has given us—our minds, our words, our compassion, and our actions—to bring hope and goodness to others. Even as a refugee community, we too are called to shine our light, especially for the least, the lost, and the lonely, and to make the world brighter through love and service.
