Another Year... Another Time for Growth!

In early January, ZRCLC staff was kept busy at our teachers' retreat in Melaka. We focused on best practices and strategies to continually improve our daily work-flow and ideas to enhance our curriculum. As our teachers develop deeper skills, complemented by our pool of virtual and in-person volunteers, the goal continues to implement ways to improve our children's learning experience.
During the retreat, our teachers also had the opportunity to visit the Montfort Youth Centre, which Zotung had dedicated proceeds from our 2025 Christmas Caroling fundraiser towards a two-year full scholarship.
And retreats cannot do without such much deserved R&R! Our staff had a well-deserved enjoyable time visiting key sights in Melaka after our discussions and planning work.

As a Catholic school, Zotung begins each Term with the celebration of Mass, offering our children, teachers, families, and all our work to the Lord. Starting the Term in prayer reminds us that education is not only about academics, but also forming hearts, nurturing values, and cultivating a sense of purpose grounded in faith. Through this, we ask God to guide our community and bless the journey ahead.
On 28 January 2026, we were privileged to celebrate Mass Fr Sixtus Thawng Uk, who has been sent by his bishop in Myanmar to pastor and care for the Myanmar refugee community in Kuala Lumpur.
The readings were proclaimed by Timothy (Myanmar) and Mella (Syria), beautifully reflecting the rich diversity of our school community. The theme of the Mass, “Being a light to the world,” was joyfully echoed in our opening hymn, “This Little Light of Mine.”
Providentially, the Mass was celebrated on the feast day of St Thomas Aquinas. In his homily, Fr Sixtus shared how St Thomas Aquinas is a powerful example of what it means to be a light to the world. St Thomas devoted his life to the pursuit of truth, wisdom, and understanding, believing that learning and questioning were ways of honouring God. Despite his great intellect, he was known for his humility, using his gifts not for personal glory, but in service to others and to help them grow closer to God.
Fr Sixtus reminded the children that being a light does not always mean doing something grand or being widely known. Often, it means using the gifts God has given us—our minds, our words, our compassion, and our actions—to bring hope and goodness to others. Even as a refugee community, we too are called to shine our light, especially for the least, the lost, and the lonely, and to make the world brighter through love and service.

On Saturday, 14 March, our students from P3-6 were treated to a behind-the-scenes look into the Int'l School of KL's (ISKL) Middle School Youth Orchestra. The morning started with breakfast at ISKL with the orchestra's 12 to 14 year old members - all of similar ages to our kids. This was followed by a walk-through of the music department where there were individual demonstrations and our kids enjoyed trying out various instruments. Guests were then treated to a dress rehearsal in the school auditorium by the orchestra.
Many thanks to ISKL for your continued support with wonderful opportunities such as this to enrich our children's experience! Our kids had a fun outing and undoubtedly benefited from exposure to such activities.

Our children had the benefit of joining a sports competition conducted by Kiwanis at Montfort Boys Town in Shah Alam this week. It was a joyous event and while our Under-12 boys were noticeably smaller than their opponents, they stood out by competing wholeheartedly and completely undeterred - a case of David and Goliath!
They came away as 2nd runner-up, which is an experience they will carry with them for life. For children who are not accustomed to participating in organised sporting competitions, this occasion was especially meaningful and a great way to learn about teamwork and sportsmanship.
Moments like these, especially their excitement at finally receiving their trophies, do so much for their confidence, their sense of belonging, and even their mental well-being. In many ways, experiences like this shape not just their character, but also their openness to learning and growth.
Big thank you to Kiwanis for having our children! Our gratitude also to all the volunteers who helped run the event and to Montfort for hosting all the participants. We are blessed by your generosity which has made a large impact on so many!

Protecting our environment has been an important theme in Zotung lessons for many years now. Today, some of our students had the wonderful opportunity to once again visit our friends at the International School of Kuala Lumpur. This time 32 kids from P1 and P2 were hosted by ISKL at their campus pond to learn about biodiversity where they learned firsthand about the importance of our environment.

Our children were especially excited to catch and study various insects and organisms around the pond. During the time there, they also had a lot of fun with a scavenger hunt and engaging with student volunteers from ISKL who showed our children the diversity of lifeforms even within a small space.
Many thanks again to ISKL for generously having our kids! It was such a meaningful day out. Our gratitude especially to Miss Chika Kumashiro Wilms and Mister Castro for arranging everything, from transporting our children to making sure the visit was both a fun and important learning experience!
